8 Storytellers and the Challenge of “perfect briefness”

Writers from Bolivia, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Peru and Switzerland will share with the public of the 25th FIL Guadalajara “the works and days of the short story craft,” as well as their most recent works

“Short stories remain –surreptitious yet solid– unchangeable as the pillar of narrative while reminding us that everything counts and everything has been told since the beginning of time,” says author Ignacio Padilla, coordinator of the International Short Story Writers Conference of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, celebrating its 5th edition with writers from Bolivia, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Peru and Switzerland.

The International Short Story Writers Conference will kick off on December 2 with the participation of Biel Mesquida (Spain), Pablo Raphael (Mexico), Giovanna Rivero (Bolivia) and Peter Stamm (Switzerland), and on December 3, Borja Bagunyá (Spain), Marcos Giralt Torrente (Spain), Fernando Iwasaki (Peru) and Isabel Mellado (Chile). All of them, says Padilla, will share “the works and days of the short story craft, their agonies and remedies facing the challenge of perfect briefness, their vision and, of course, there most recent works.”

Never like today has it been so necessary to stop and reflect on the importance of short stories “in an ultramodernity that focuses essentially on novels,” explains the coordinator of the event, for whom “the participation of the most distinguished exponents in the genre in our language and the enthusiasm of the followers of brief storytelling” have made of the International Short Story Writers Conference “one of the most vivid spaces to reflect on and promote the genre.”

In its four previous editions, the International Short Story Writers Conference has welcomed Sergio Pitol, Luisa Valenzuela, Jabbar Yassin Hussin, Andrés Neuman, Jorge F. Hernández, Goran Petrovi?, Fabio Morábito, Samanta Schweblin, Marcelo Birmajer, Espido Freire, Guadalupe Nettel, Ricardo Piglia and Cristina Rivera Garza, among other writers who have shared their views and offered their works to the public of the Guadalajara International Book Fair.
