INTERNATIONAL TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION CONGRESS

International Translation and Interpretation Congress San Jerónimo 2009

“Translation: The Border Between Languages and Cultures”

For third consecutive occasion, the now traditional annual congress held by the Mexican Translators’ Organization West Branch will take place during the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) on November 28th and 29th of 2009.

The Congress’ goal is to be a forum for professional updating and enrichment of translators and interpreters, and aspires to become a place for open discussion on the practical and cultural problems faced by the trade.

This year’s theme is in tune with one of the symbolic meanings of FIL’s guest of honor of this year: the city of Los Angeles. Being a city where Mexicans, Americans and immigrants from other countries converge, whose streets are filled with voices in multiple languages and signs in diverse alphabets, it evokes the idea of a place on the border, where two or more cultures come in contact. That is precisely the place occupied by translators and interpreters: they are at the meeting point between two cultures and at the same time they are the bridge that allows communication between them. In the case of physical borders between two countries, these also become the challenging field of action of translator or interpreter.

For that reason, the theme of our congress will be the border, both physical and symbolic, seen from the translation and interpretation perspective. From this main theme arise aspects that we propose as possible points of interest: translation and intercultural negotiation; cultural and linguistic identity; translation and migration; contact between languages and linguistic interference; bilingualism and translation; spanglish; without leaving out other more general subjects, like teaching translation, the translators’ tools, translation and interpretation of specific fields, etc.
