Meeting of Ibero-American Independent Bookstores and Publishers: “Otra Mirada”
Two Shores, One Ocean, Multiple Accents
On the occasion of Spain being the Guest of Honor at the 2024 Guadalajara International Book Fair, the 5th International Booksellers Forum and the 6th Meeting of Ibero-American Independent Bookstores and Publishers, "Another Perspective," will be held jointly. These two internationally renowned professional events are key references for the book sector in Spain and Latin America.
The dual event, organized by Librería Carlos Fuentes, the Guadalajara International Book Fair, the University of Guadalajara Press, and Librería Cálamo, is sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. It aims to analyze the current state of editorial relationships between Mexico, Spain, and Latin America, preview their future, and contribute to the creation of permanent networks for cultural, social, and economic collaboration.
The events will take place from December 1 to 3, 2024, as part of the FIL Guadalajara professional program, and will feature debate panels, conferences, workshops, and networking opportunities.

In the year 2000, at the beginning of the new millennium, Spain was the Guest of Honor at the FIL. It returns as the Guest of Honor in 2024. How have bookstores changed during this period?
Books and bookstores survived apocalyptic predictions and experienced the emergence of new business models, enduring the effects of a pandemic and the natural ebb and flow of the economy. It may be timeto take stock.
In light of these factors and many more, three bookstore projects of varying dimensions and locations will share their perspectives on the past, present, and future of a profession in constant transformation.
Participants: Antonio Ramírez, César Aguilar, Natalia Miranda
Moderator: Valentín Ortiz

In recent years, publishers and booksellers have discovered that association and guild management allow for the creation of spaces for dialogue and collaborative work, which help grow the publishing industry and increase reading rates.

Inaugural Talk: The Recovery of the Lost Home… That Perhaps We Don’t Want to Recover
Librería Carlos Fuentes, Centro Cultural Universitario
A Mexican writer living and working in Spain. A Spanish writer living and working in Mexico. Paradoxes of a Globalized World?
An ocean separates and unites us at the same time. A shared language brings us closer while highlighting our differences amidst thousands of nuances. Mexican novelist Brenda Navarro resides in Madrid, while Spanish philosopher Pau Luque lives in Mexico City. What did they seek on the other side? What do they miss from their places of origin? What have they found in their new destinations?

It is increasingly common to find books whose central themes include publishing, bibliophilia, bookstores, and more. Three editorial projects that have opened their catalogs to reflections on the book trades will be presented.

Workshop 2: Paredro Podcast and the construction of reading communities
Salón D, Área Internacional, Expo Guadalajara
In recent years we have seen the rise of podcasts as a space that brings readers/listeners closer to their authors through interviews or conversations. However, how can the format go beyond a journalistic space and become a generator of reading communities? How can it become the meeting point between bookstores and readers? How can a podcast be made an attractive format from the literary promotion and criticism perspective and that also attracts a wide variety of readers? During this workshop, the experience of Paredro Podcast and its teachings in the field of literary promotion and education will be shared.
Imparted by: Camilo Hoyos Gómez

Workshop 4: Metrics, Passion, and Truth
Salón D, Área Internacional, Expo Guadalajara
Reflections on distribution, the relationship with bookstores, and communication among the key players in the publishing world. How challenging can it be to move a box of books from the center to the periphery? What role do infrastructure and metrics play in deciding whether a cardboard box full of ideas crosses the country?

Panel 6: Of Ants and Titans: Selling Books in Our Language(s): Nuances and Perspectives. Publishers
Salón de Profesionales, Área Internacional, Expo Guadalajara
Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Chile… the quantity and variety of independent publishing represent a vast cultural and business heritage, a wealth that deserves recognition and support.
Despite— or perhaps because of— the constant growth of major multinational book corporations, not a day goes by without the announcement of a new publishing house, a new professional, cultural, and personal venture.
Three editorial projects, from different scales and origins, share their perspectives with us.
