Inside the secret world of literary scouts, or why (good) information is everything

What is a literary scout? Scouting occupies a strange niche in book publishing, itself a rather inscrutable business from the outside. Even people within the industry still don’t know what scouts do, how they work and, more importantly, who pays their salary!
A short answer to the initial question would probably be that scouts are the matchmakers of the industry. Representing publishing houses around the world, they promote their clients to agents and publishers, and in turn report back to their clients with agents’ and publishers’ newest and hottest books. It involves a lot of reading, a lot of writing, and – as in most professions – a good amount of luck.

With over nine years of publishing experience, the last four acting as an international literary scout, Thais Pahl offers an overview of literary scouting, why it matters in an increasingly fast-paced world, and when scouts can actually help your book travel.
