Call for Nominations Begins for the 2016 FIL Literary Award

The award will be given at this year’s 30th annual Guadalajara International Book Fair. Nominations will be accepted until July 29

Nominations for the 2016 FIL Literary Award in Romance languages will be accepted starting Wednesday until July 29. The award was created in 1991 to recognize a living writer who has made a meaningful creative contribution in any literary genre—poetry, novel, theatre, short story or essay—in Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian, Rumanian or Portuguese. The award comes with a purse of $150,000 USD that will be presented to the winner during the opening ceremonies of the 30th Guadalajara International Book Fair.

Cultural or educational institutions and associations, as well as groups with an interest in literature, may send nominations. The members of the judging panel for the Award may also propose candidates in accordance with the procedures and deadlines established in the call for entries. Candidates must be presented using the nomination form available on the FIL’s website (www.fil.com.mx). This is the only method for sending nominations, and only nominations that meet the requirements and deadlines established in the call for entries will be accepted.

Nominations will be accepted until Friday, July 29 and the winner will be announced on August 29 in a press conference that will be held in Guadalajara. Seven prestigious writers or literary critics who have made important contributions to literary review will form the judging panel. The judges will be chosen by the Award’s Honor Committee and their names will be announced prior to deliberation.

Candidates for the award may be authors of any genre, regardless of their nationality or sex, who write in the following romance languages: Spanish, Catalan, Galician, French, Italian, Rumanian or Portuguese. Their literary work must be original and published.
