Biography
Nicanor Parra (San Fabián de Alico, Chile, 1914) was a key poet of Chilean literature and a precursor of “colloquial poetry” and antipoetry. He studied Physics and Mathematics in the United States and England, and his work transformed Latin American poetry by incorporating plain, everyday language. Among his books stand out Poemas y antipoemas, Versos de salón, La cueca larga, and Obra gruesa, which earned him Chile’s National Literature Prize. He received numerous international recognitions, including honorary doctorates and the Reina SofÃa Prize for Ibero-American Poetry.
