Biography

Born in Lima in 1939, Alfredo Bryce Echenique is one of the fundamental figures of Latin American literature. His work has spanned and influenced several generations since the publication of his first book of short stories, Huerto cerrado. His prose is full of humor, a satirical sense, and an excellent register of orality. He is the author of Un mundo para Julius (1970), a novel that has become indispensable, and of a prolific oeuvre that includes novels such as La vida exagerada de Martín Romaña (1981), El hombre que hablaba de Octavia de Cádiz (1985), and No me esperen en abril (1995), among others. This great chronicler of the lives and the literary and political searches of Latin Americans of his generation explores themes that brush against illness, happiness, love, and sadness, and moves with equal effectiveness through the short story and the novel.
