The University of Guadalajara, through a project created by the Environmental Sciences Museum as part of the University’s Cultural Center, and with the support of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, has established the José Emilio Pacheco City and Nature Award. The prize, which will be given for the first time this year, will be dedicated to poetry. The winning author, who must write in Spanish and have at least ten unpublished poems or poems published in the last five years that are related to nature, urban sustainability, socio-ecological harmony and environmental conservation, will be given a purse of US $10,000. The award is dedicated to poet José Emilio Pacheco, whose work explores the duality between cities and nature.
Created by the University of Guadalajara, and with the collaboration of the National Institute for Indigenous Languages, the Culture Ministry, the National Commission for the Development of the Indigenous Cultures and Jalisco’s Department of Education, the American Indigenous Literature Award is granted to enrich, protect and promote the legacy and richness of Mexico’s indigenous peoples through literature in all its forms, and to and acknowledge and further develop the careers and works of indigenous authors. The award, which carries a purse of US $25,000, will be given for the fourth time at the 2016 FIL Guadalajara.

The dual event, organized by Librería Carlos Fuentes, the Guadalajara International Book Fair, the University of Guadalajara Press, and Librería Cálamo, is sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. It aims to analyze the current state of editorial relationships between Mexico, Spain, and Latin America, glimpse their future, and contribute to the creation of permanent networks for cultural, social, and economic collaboration.
The events will take place from December 1 to 3, 2024, as part of the FIL Guadalajara professional program, and will feature debate panels, conferences, workshops, and networking opportunities.

Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Chile… the quantity and variety of independent publishing represent a vast cultural and business heritage, a wealth that deserves recognition and support.
Despite— or perhaps because of— the constant growth of major multinational book corporations, not a day goes by without the announcement of a new publishing house, a new professional, cultural, and personal venture.
Three editorial projects, from different scales and origins, share their perspectives with us.
Participants: Sandra Ollo, Alejandro Katz, María Fernanda Paz-Castillo
Moderator: Lola Larumbe
Sandra Ollo
Invitado de HonorBorn in Pamplona, where she lived until she was 29 and completed much of her academic training between the University of Navarra, where she earned a degree in Hispanic Philology, and the National Distance Education University (UNED), where she earned a degree in English Philology. Her early professional steps were also taken in this northern city, working as a research technician at the Félix Huarte Chair of Aesthetics and Contemporary Art, which she combined with teaching at the Institute of Language and Culture at the same university. It was at this chair where she came into contact with the editorial world, as she was responsible for the institution's publications and served as Chief Editor of the magazine Encuentros.
In 2006, she met Jaume Vallcorba, founder first of Quaderns Crema (1979), a reference imprint in Catalan, and later of Acantilado (1999). In 2008, she moved to Barcelona to share both her personal and professional life with him. The following years were a true immersion in the art of editing under the guidance of one of the greatest masters in the Hispanic world, and Sandra Ollo spent this time performing nearly every editorial task.
After Jaume Vallcorba's death in 2014, she took on the role of Editorial Director and completed her training with a master's degree from the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. In the ten years she has led the publishing house, she has continued to learn and make discoveries, hoping that Acantilado and Quaderns Crema will remain a space of passionate learning for those as eager to learn as she was 20 years ago. She is a member of the Navarre Council of Culture, a trustee of the Architecture and Society Foundation, and a member of the Board of the National Library of Spain.

A translator and essayist, he regularly publishes articles in major media outlets across Argentina, Latin America, and Spain. In 2020, he won the first prize in the essay competition organized by the National Academy of Political Sciences of Argentina. Lola Larumbe
Invitado de HonorA bookseller with a background in biological sciences, she began her journey in the world of books in 1980 at the Rafael Alberti bookstore in Madrid, where she is currently responsible and director. In 2005, she was awarded the V Premio Librero Cultural by the Ministry of Culture and the Confederación Española de Gremios y Asociaciones de Libreros (CEGAL) for her project Encuentros en Alberti. This initiative has transformed the Rafael Alberti bookstore into one of Madrid’s cultural landmarks, hosting major figures in Spanish and Latin American literature as well as emerging writers and creators over the years.
