The University of Guadalajara, through a project created by the Environmental Sciences Museum as part of the University’s Cultural Center, and with the support of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, has established the José Emilio Pacheco City and Nature Award. The prize, which will be given for the first time this year, will be dedicated to poetry. The winning author, who must write in Spanish and have at least ten unpublished poems or poems published in the last five years that are related to nature, urban sustainability, socio-ecological harmony and environmental conservation, will be given a purse of US $10,000. The award is dedicated to poet José Emilio Pacheco, whose work explores the duality between cities and nature.
Created by the University of Guadalajara, and with the collaboration of the National Institute for Indigenous Languages, the Culture Ministry, the National Commission for the Development of the Indigenous Cultures and Jalisco’s Department of Education, the American Indigenous Literature Award is granted to enrich, protect and promote the legacy and richness of Mexico’s indigenous peoples through literature in all its forms, and to and acknowledge and further develop the careers and works of indigenous authors. The award, which carries a purse of US $25,000, will be given for the fourth time at the 2016 FIL Guadalajara.
The SM Ibero-American Award for Literature for Children and Young People was implemented in 2005, the year of Ibero-American literature, with the goal of promoting literature for children and young people throughout Ibero-America. The award is given out each year during the Guadalajara International Book Fair to recognize writers of literature for children and young people and carries a purse of US $30,000.

With the goal of creating a network that helps to encourage the work of illustrators of books for children and young people in Ibero-America, the SM Foundation and the FIL Guadalajara invites illustrators to submit their work to be included in the Annual Ibero-American Illustration Catalog. The 45 works selected will be displayed in an exposition at the Guadalajara International Book Fair. In addition, illustrators will have the opportunity to work on an illustrated book with Ediciones SM and the winner will be given US $5,000. Two Shores, One Ocean, Multiple Accents
On the occasion of Spain being the Guest of Honor at the Guadalajara International Book Fair 2024, the 5th International Booksellers Forum and the 6th Meeting of Ibero-American Independent Bookstores and Publishers, "Another Perspective," will be held jointly. These two internationally renowned professional events are key references for the book sector in Spain and Latin America.
The dual event, organized by Librería Carlos Fuentes, the Guadalajara International Book Fair, the University of Guadalajara Press, and Librería Cálamo, is sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. It aims to analyze the current state of editorial relationships between Mexico, Spain, and Latin America, glimpse their future, and contribute to the creation of permanent networks for cultural, social, and economic collaboration.
The events will take place from December 1 to 3, 2024, as part of the FIL Guadalajara professional program, and will feature debate panels, conferences, workshops, and networking opportunities.

Against this backdrop, innovative recent experiences will be presented: the Bookstore Laboratory of the Librerías de la Red de Librerías Independientes (RELI - Mexico), the Universidad Autónoma de Nueva León, and «Parix: A School for the Spanish Book."

Luis González Martín
Invitado de HonorHe is the General Director of the Fundación Germán Sánchez Ruipérez (FGSR), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting reading and innovating in the book industry. He holds a degree in Law and a master's degree in Labor and Tax Consulting from the Autonomous University of Madrid. In 1992, he joined the Senior Corps of State Administrators, and since then has held various senior positions within the Spanish Administration. In his most recent role at the Ministry of Culture, he launched the Reading Promotion Plan 2001-2004. During these stages, he also served on the Steering Committee of the international nuclear fusion project (JET) and on the Board of Directors of Enresa, and was awarded the Distinguished Cross of Saint Raymond of Peñafort. Since joining FGSR in 2004, he has launched projects such as Readmagine, Renodo, Lecturalab, Canal Lector, Lectylab, and PARIX, and has led or participated in European projects like Tisp, Aldus Up, Sidt, Creative Shift, ThinkPub, and 1234redes. He is the 3rd Vice President of the Spanish Association of Foundations and a member of the Madrid City Council’s Council of Culture, appointed by unanimous decision of all political groups.

Antonio Ramos Revillas
Director of the University Press of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) since 2016. He holds a degree in Spanish Literature from UANL, which awarded him the Arts Prize in 2015 for his literary career. He was part of the Mexico 20 selection, organized by the British Council, Conaculta, and the Hay Festival, recognizing him as one of the 20 most important writers under 40 in the country. His most recent novel is Playa Bagdad. He is a member of the National System of Creators of Art.

Alejandra Soriano
Professional in literary studies and social communication with experience in public policy design and the production and execution of communication and management projects in the cultural sector. Her research interests focus on reading policies and libraries, studies of the reception of written culture, and gender studies related to literature. She has taught at university institutions such as Jorge Tadeo Lozano University, ICESI University, and Universidad del Rosario. She is currently the literature manager at the District Institute of Arts (IDARTES).
Claudia Bautista
She holds a degree in International Relations from UNAM, a master's in Government and Public Affairs from FLACSO, Mexico City, and is a doctoral candidate in Regional History at Universidad Veracruzana. At the beginning of her professional career, she ventured into international trade and later into academic research on organic agriculture and its dynamics. She participated in the founding and leadership of several community-based productive projects related to small-scale farming and the environment.
In 2010, she moved to Xalapa and became a co-founder of Hyperion Librería, one of the most recognized independent bookstores in the state of Veracruz. In 2018, she established the Network of Independent Bookstores, the first Mexican initiative focused on raising the profile of these businesses, managing initiatives for their professionalization, and ensuring their influence on public policies that guarantee their well-being.
In 2020, she completed a diploma in Bookstore Management and Creation at UNED and was a scholarship recipient of the international program for booksellers organized by the Frankfurt Book Fair. In the same year, she participated in the creation of the Latin American Network of Independent Bookstores (RELLI). In 2022, she took part in the CONACYT project “Towards an Observatory of Reading in the State of Mexico” with researchers from the Colegio Mexiquense.
