Arpilleras Workshop
Arpilleras are paintings made from scraps of fabric and are put together as if it were a collage to create a scene. This technique emerged in Chile during the military dictatorship. The embroidery was done by groups of women who captured their own life stories in their works, including social and political conflicts. Over time, this form of expression spread to other Latin American countries such as Peru, Ecuador or Colombia.
In this workshop we were inspired by popular arpilleras to create our own design. We will start by creating the illustration that will later be transferred to the fabric. From that moment on, we will choose the appliqués to use, to finish by embroidering small details. In the process we will learn different types of stitches and techniques to create our arpillera.
