The University of Guadalajara, through a project created by the Environmental Sciences Museum as part of the University’s Cultural Center, and with the support of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, has established the José Emilio Pacheco City and Nature Award. The prize, which will be given for the first time this year, will be dedicated to poetry. The winning author, who must write in Spanish and have at least ten unpublished poems or poems published in the last five years that are related to nature, urban sustainability, socio-ecological harmony and environmental conservation, will be given a purse of US $10,000. The award is dedicated to poet José Emilio Pacheco, whose work explores the duality between cities and nature.
Created by the University of Guadalajara, and with the collaboration of the National Institute for Indigenous Languages, the Culture Ministry, the National Commission for the Development of the Indigenous Cultures and Jalisco’s Department of Education, the American Indigenous Literature Award is granted to enrich, protect and promote the legacy and richness of Mexico’s indigenous peoples through literature in all its forms, and to and acknowledge and further develop the careers and works of indigenous authors. The award, which carries a purse of US $25,000, will be given for the fourth time at the 2016 FIL Guadalajara.
The SM Ibero-American Award for Literature for Children and Young People was implemented in 2005, the year of Ibero-American literature, with the goal of promoting literature for children and young people throughout Ibero-America. The award is given out each year during the Guadalajara International Book Fair to recognize writers of literature for children and young people and carries a purse of US $30,000.
With the goal of creating a network that helps to encourage the work of illustrators of books for children and young people in Ibero-America, the SM Foundation and the FIL Guadalajara invites illustrators to submit their work to be included in the Annual Ibero-American Illustration Catalog. The 45 works selected will be displayed in an exposition at the Guadalajara International Book Fair. In addition, illustrators will have the opportunity to work on an illustrated book with Ediciones SM and the winner will be given US $5,000. Pedro Páramo: bringing the words of Juan Rulfo to the screen
Acclaimed cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto makes his directorial debut with the feature-length adaptation of Pedro Páramo, Juan Rulfo's iconic novel. In this panel, through readings of fragments of the novel with the actresses Dolores Heredia and Ilse Salas, Rodrigo will delve into the creative process of each of these scenes. Moderated by Francisco Payó González, this discussion will offer an insight into the creative process behind the adaptation, and how they managed to bring this work of Mexican and Latin American literature to life.

Ilse Salas
She studied theater at the Contemporary Theater Forum under the direction of Ludwik Margules. She began her career in the industry as a host in the children's section of Canal 11, where she met Alonso Ruiz Palacios, with whom she worked on the film Güeros (2014). Salas ventured into television with the series Locas de amor (2010), where she shared credits with renowned actors such as Cecilia Suárez, Daniel Giménez Cacho and Ximena Ayala. That same year she made her film debut with Hidalgo. La historia jamás contada (2010). She has been involved in projects such as Las niñas bien (2018), Señorita 89 (2022), 100 días para enamorarnos (2020– 2021), Plaza Catedral (2021) Amores modernos (2019), and now Pedro Páramo. She has been nominated for the Ariel three times in the category of best female performance for Güeros, Plaza Catedral and Familia, and won on one occasion for her role in Las niñas bien.
Dolores Heredia
She is a Mexican actress and producer born in La Paz, Baja California Sur. As an actress she has made more than 50 films, including: Dos crímenes, Santitos, La hija del Puma, Desiertos mares, Fuera del cielo, Rudo y cursi, Días de gracia, Get the Gringo, A Better Life, Bless Me, Última, Huérfanos, Sonora, Milagro en Praga, Two Men in Town, El norte sobre el vacío, Estoy todo lo iguana que se puede, El águila y el gusano. She has been awarded as an actress in Colombia, Dominican Republic, France and Mexico. She was nominated six times for the Ariel for her work in Santitos, Dos crímenes, Huérfanos, Sonora, Chicuarotes and El norte sobre el vacío. In 2008 she received the Best actress Award at the Guadalajara International Film Festival for three films: Conozca la cabeza de Juan Pérez, Desierto adentro and Enemigos íntimos. She was part of the National Theater Company, the Theater Experimentation Center of the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA) and the Finzi Pasca Company. She has participated in works such as Lope de Aguirre traidor, Ay, Carmela, Te amo, Aitestás, Visitatio, 1337, El viaje de los cantores, Máquinas de coser and Las analfabetas. She was involved in the creation and as acting couch at the Cirque du Soleil show: Corteo, as well as in Rain and Nomade del Cirque Eloize. From 2015 to 2017 she was president of the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences, and founding president of the Ibero-American Federation of Film Academies in the same period.
Sara Poot Herrera
Teacher of Primary Education at the Escuela Normal Rural of Atequiza, Jalisco; she has a degree in Philosophy from the Universidad de Guadalajara; a Master's in Literature from the Escuela Normal Superior of Tepic and a PhD in Hispanic Literature from El Colegio de México, with a thesis on the work of Juan José Arreola.
Between books, chapters, prologues, essays, and articles, in addition to creative texts, she has more than 300 publications. She is the director and co-founder of UC-Mexicanistas, an international association of writers and researchers in Mexican culture studies, and she belongs to several editorial boards; she is also the deputy director of the Prolija Memoria magazine, at the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana.
She is a corresponding member of Mérida at the Mexican Academy of Language, and a member of the Alfonso Reyes Chair of the Tecnológico de Monterrey. She has received the Antonio Mediz Bolio Award from the Instituto de Cultura de Yucatán (2000); the Héctor Victoria Aguilar Medal from the H. Congreso del Estado de Yucatán (2008); the Yucatán Medal from the Government of the State (2009); the Galardón Honorífico Universitario Enrique Díaz de León from the Universidad de Guadalajara (2009); the Eligio Ancona Medal from the Government of the State of Yucatán by decision of the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (2014); the Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award (2013-2014), from the University of California, Santa Bárbara (UCSB), where she is a Distinguished Professor, and the Presea Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, awarded by the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana (2021). This year, the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán awarded her an honorary doctorate.

Manuel García Rulfo
Es un actor de trayectoria internacional, nacido en Guadalajara, Jalisco. De nacionalidad mexicana y estadounidense, su pasión por el cine se manifestó desde una edad temprana, que lo llevó a estudiar actuación en la Escuela de Cine de Nueva York y en el prestigioso Larry Moss Studio en Los Ángeles, California.
